Investment & Goals for M-Pesa 2.0 Detailed

Safaricom elaborated on its strategic investment in the M-Pesa 2.0 upgrade, earmarking approximately $309 million annually. This commitment aims to dramatically improve platform reliability, scalability, and security to handle growing transaction volumes and safeguard user data against evolving cyber threats.

The upgrade is also designed to keep the service competitive and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks encouraging interoperability and faster payment systems.

M-Pesa 2.0 Upgrade Announced

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa announced "M-Pesa 2.0," a series of significant enhancements focused on service reliability. A key feature is the planned implementation of zero-downtime deployments, allowing for seamless system maintenance without interrupting customer transactions.

The upgrade also includes a substantial boost in cybersecurity to protect the platform and user data. The full rollout is anticipated to occur progressively over the next 6 to 12 months.

New M-Pesa Charges & Policies Effective

Effective Date: January 1, 2025

Safaricom implemented new M-Pesa charges, standardizing fees for sending money to any registered mobile money user in Kenya (Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom). Direct transfers to unregistered users were discontinued to enhance security.

Transaction limits were increased: the single transaction cap is now KES 250,000, while the daily limit and maximum account balance are both KES 500,000. Joweni calculators have been updated to reflect all these 2025 tariffs.
