Current Tariff Categories & Rates (2025)

Kenya Power uses a tiered tariff structure based on your three‑month average consumption. Your tariff category is automatically determined by KPLC based on your historical usage patterns, not your current month's consumption. This means reducing your usage for just one month won't immediately change your tariff band.

How to Buy Tokens & Pay Bills

Understanding the different payment methods and processes for KPLC services is crucial for managing your electricity account effectively. Below are detailed step-by-step guides for both prepaid and postpaid customers, along with important tips to ensure smooth transactions.

Buying Prepaid Tokens via M‑Pesa

M-Pesa remains the most popular method for purchasing KPLC tokens due to its convenience and 24/7 availability. The process is straightforward, but it's important to use the correct business number and ensure your meter number is entered accurately to avoid failed transactions.

  1. Open your M‑Pesa menu and select Lipa na M‑Pesa from the main options.
  2. Choose Pay Bill from the Lipa na M-Pesa submenu.
  3. Enter Business Number: 888880 (this is specifically for prepaid token purchases).
  4. Enter your prepaid meter number as the Account Number. Double-check this number as incorrect entries will cause transaction failures.
  5. Enter the amount you wish to spend on electricity tokens. Remember the minimum amount is typically KSh 50.
  6. Enter your M‑Pesa PIN to authorize the transaction.
  7. You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-Pesa followed by another SMS from KPLC containing your 20-digit token number.
  8. Go to your prepaid meter and key in the 20-digit token exactly as received, then press the Enter or Accept button.
  9. Your meter will display the units loaded and your new balance.

Important Note: If your token shows "REJECT" on your meter, ensure you've entered it correctly. Some meters require older tokens to be loaded before newer ones, and occasionally meters need Key Revision Number (KRN) updates which KPLC sends as special codes.

Paying Postpaid Bills via M‑Pesa

Postpaid customers receive monthly bills and have the flexibility to pay the full amount or make partial payments. However, KPLC may disconnect supply if bills remain unpaid beyond the due date, so timely payment is important for uninterrupted service.

  1. Access your M‑Pesa menu and select Lipa na M‑Pesa.
  2. Choose Pay Bill from the available options.
  3. Enter Business Number: 888888 (note this is different from the prepaid number - it ends with four 8s instead of one 0).
  4. Enter your KPLC account number as shown on your bill as the Account Number. This is typically a longer number than prepaid meter numbers.
  5. Enter the amount you wish to pay. You can pay the full bill amount or make a partial payment.
  6. Enter your M‑Pesa PIN to complete the transaction.
  7. You'll receive confirmation messages from both M-Pesa and KPLC acknowledging your payment.
  8. Your payment will reflect on your account within 24 hours, and you can check your balance using KPLC's USSD service *977#.

Payment Tips: Keep all payment confirmation messages as proof of payment. If your account shows arrears despite recent payments, contact KPLC customer care with your transaction reference numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did I get fewer units this month for the same money?

The number of units you receive changes monthly because of variable levies like the Fuel Cost Charge (FCC) and Foreign Exchange Rate Fluctuation Adjustment (FERFA). When global fuel prices rise or the Kenya Shilling weakens against major currencies, these charges increase. Since these levies are deducted first from your payment before purchasing actual electricity units, higher levies mean fewer units for the same amount of money. The FCC alone can vary from as low as KSh 2 to over KSh 4 per unit depending on fuel market conditions.

What is the Fuel Cost Charge (FCC) and why does it change so much?

The FCC covers the costs of generating power from thermal sources like diesel, heavy fuel oil, and gas turbines. Kenya relies on thermal power generation especially during dry seasons when hydroelectric capacity is reduced. The FCC is updated monthly by EPRA (Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority) based on international fuel prices and local currency exchange rates. During global fuel price volatility or when the Kenya Shilling depreciates, the FCC increases significantly, directly affecting your electricity costs.

How is my tariff category determined and can I change it?

Your tariff band (e.g., Lifeline, Domestic 1, Domestic 2) is determined by your average monthly consumption over the previous three months. KPLC calculates this automatically each month. If your three-month average is 30 kWh or below, you qualify for the cheaper Lifeline tariff. If it's 31-100 kWh, you're in Domestic 1, and above 100 kWh puts you in Domestic 2. You cannot manually change your tariff - it adjusts automatically based on your consumption pattern. To move to a lower tariff band, you need to consistently reduce consumption for at least three months.

What happens if my meter displays "REJECT" when loading a token?

A "REJECT" message usually indicates one of several issues: you've entered the token incorrectly (check all 20 digits), the token has expired (tokens are valid for 30 days), you're trying to load an older token after a newer one has been loaded, or your meter needs a Key Revision Number (KRN) update. Some meters require tokens to be loaded in chronological order. If you receive KRN update codes from KPLC (usually 4-digit codes), enter these first before loading your regular token. If problems persist, contact KPLC technical support.

Why are there so many different charges on my electricity bill?

Electricity pricing in Kenya includes multiple components to cover the entire value chain from generation to distribution. The base tariff covers basic electricity supply costs. The FCC covers fuel costs for thermal generation, FERFA adjusts for foreign exchange impacts on imported fuel and equipment, WARMA levy supports water resource management for hydroelectric power, EPRA levy funds regulatory oversight, REP levy supports rural electrification expansion, and VAT is the government tax. Each charge serves a specific purpose in maintaining and expanding Kenya's electricity infrastructure.

Can I check my KPLC account balance and consumption history?

Yes, KPLC provides several ways to check your account information. For prepaid customers, dial *977# and follow the prompts to check your remaining units and recent token purchases. You can also use the KPLC MyPower app available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. For postpaid customers, the USSD service shows your current bill balance and payment history. You can also create an online account on the KPLC website (kplc.co.ke) to access detailed consumption patterns, billing history, and make payments.

What should I do if my prepaid meter runs out of units at night or during holidays?

KPLC's token purchasing system operates 24/7 through M-Pesa and other mobile money platforms, so you can buy tokens anytime, even during holidays and weekends. However, if you're completely out of units and your power is disconnected, most KPLC prepaid meters have an emergency credit feature that provides a small amount of units (usually 5-10 kWh) to tide you over until you can purchase more tokens. This emergency credit is automatically deducted from your next token purchase. To activate it, press the appropriate buttons on your meter as indicated in your meter manual.

Why is my electricity bill higher during certain months of the year?

Your electricity bill fluctuates seasonally due to several factors. During dry seasons (typically January-March and July-September), Kenya relies more heavily on expensive thermal power generation, causing the FCC to increase significantly. Additionally, your actual consumption may increase during hot months due to increased fan and cooling usage, or during December holidays when households typically consume more electricity. The FERFA charge also tends to be higher when the Kenya Shilling is weak against major currencies, which often correlates with certain economic cycles throughout the year.

How accurate is this calculator compared to official KPLC calculations?

Our calculator uses the exact same formula and rates that KPLC employs in their official billing system. We regularly update the variable charges (FCC, FERFA, Inflation Adjustment) based on EPRA's monthly publications and KPLC's official announcements. However, small discrepancies may occur due to rounding differences, timing of rate updates, or special adjustments that KPLC occasionally applies. The calculator provides estimates that are typically accurate within 1-2% of your actual bill or token value. For legal or dispute purposes, always refer to your official KPLC bill or token receipt.

What's the difference between the various KPLC business numbers for M-Pesa payments?

KPLC uses different M-Pesa business numbers for different services to ensure payments are processed correctly. 888880 is exclusively for purchasing prepaid tokens - payments to this number generate electricity tokens. 888888 is for postpaid bill payments - money sent here pays your monthly bill balance. Using the wrong business number can cause your payment to be misallocated, leading to delays in service. Always double-check you're using the correct number: 888880 for tokens (ends with 0), 888888 for bills (ends with four 8s). Some older documentation may reference 888881, but this has been replaced by 888880.
